We are so grateful to share with you that on Wednesday, November 23rd, Rescue:Freedom will be teaming up with One Day’s Wages to rescue 60 young women and girls from sexual slavery in Pune, India.
India has long been renowned as a country with a significant human trafficking problem, and we are grateful to have been fighting sexual slavery in this region for some time. Studies and surveys sponsored by the Ministry of Women and Child Development estimate there are about 3 million women and children in sexual slavery in the country, of which an estimated 40% are children. This equates to approximately 1.2 million children in India. Currently, it is believed that as many as 2,000 women and children are trapped in sexual slavery in the city of Pune, India. The abuse, exploitation, and suffering these children endure is unimaginable and their need for rescue is critical.
Our partnership with One Day’s Wages will establish a new program with a local service provider to aggressively aid the rescue of children trapped in sexual slavery. Our local partner will employ a team of experienced and trained professionals to go undercover into brothels with equipment to gather needed information to confirm locations where children are being sold for sex. Upon confirmation, the rescue of these sexually enslaved children will be coordinated and expedited in partnership with local police. Following the rescue, children will be transitioned to a government home in Pune for case verification then on to a restorative residential programs including our partner safe home already operating in Pune. Alternatively, if it is safe and possible to do so, rescued children will be carefully and collaboratively reintegrated into their communities and homes of origin. To help ensure the conviction and sentencing of traffickers, all relevant intelligence and information gathered during each rescue will be shared with prosecutors. One Days Wages has generously awarded us a matching grant to fund this project meaning we are half way to our launch goal!
We are looking for freedom fighters to help us with this unique project. A gift of $300 will fully fund the rescue of a child from the brothel in Pune!
